While we wait, I can offer the recount of talking with AB at the book signing. It is hard to believe, even for me, this was the 11th time I saw Alton at event. I have certainly made up time for the years I couldn't get out to his book signings and demos.
At this point, I don't think he gives me a proper greeting anymore. He just sees me and probably thinks "Oh no, she's back." All joking aside, Alton is always warm and friendly to me if not a little snarky too.Being the tenacious journalist I know I am and wanting with every fiber of my being to get an interview with AB, the subject of my recent interview with Harold McGee had to be brought to his attention. I proudly told him that Dr. McGee was gracious to talk with me about his new book Keys to Good Cooking. I hoped this bit of news would sway Alton and make him see that not only do I enjoy cooking and big fan of his projects but a serious food writer as well.
The revelation of my interview seemed to surprise AB, he looked down at me with big eyes and stepped back. I told him I had a copy of the article with me, which he promptly asked if he could read. I said I brought for him to see and that I hoped he would make him reconsider giving me an interview. At this point I saw his head shaking and heard a low grumbling "No." Undaunted, I said not for the fansite but for my freelance Suite 101 writing. AB said, "No. I don't do that either."
What happened next surprised me, Alton stepped closer to me and asked, "Was he nice?"
I smiled and said, "Yes, very nice." My snarky side failed to launch because I should've have said, "very nice because he let me interview him unlike you." But I didn't.
After my reply, Alton added, "You know I've never met him." I nodded, remembering that he said that in an interview once.
I confessed that talking with Dr. McGee intimidated me because he knows so much about food science. Immedately, Alton replied. "Oh, me too." Then paused and added again, "I've never met him."
Somewhere after this conversation AB's assistant, Jim, has us take a photo (the one above). Alton put his arm across my back and said, "Another one to add to your 600 other photos." I don't remember replying or even laughing at that crack probably because I was saddened that not even the biggest interview of my life worked to change Alton's mind and heart about giving me a shot.
Still sad, I walked over to talk with AB's assistant, aka Twitchy, for a bit while mom talked with Alton. She brought a cow teakettle for him to sign and it caused quite a bit of interest with AB. I heard him ask if it mooed. That caused me to turn around and say that I asked the same question. Alton was totally engrossed in examining the cow and making jokes about how people actually sat around a table and thought about designing something like that.

I've been a fan of Mr. Brown's for many years and it is sad to see over the past few years he seems to be caught up in the "celebrity" thing.
The fact that he won't let you interview him seal that for me. This is a site about him, for his fans but he doesn't want to talk with you? That comment about your Suite 101 writing was out of line. I've read all of the articles you post here and the are professional and well done.
As much as I enjoy his show, I think he's too big for his britches now. And that's sad.
Great article, Lisa! I hope you get that interview someday!
I don't think it's celebrity at all. I think it's just, for lack of a better word, willful blindness. I know, from what I've read and heard, and overheard the man himself saying, that he has has crappy crappy things happen with blogs in the past.
But that's no excuse. Every time he talks to major media, these so called "respectable journalists" set traps for him that he REPEATEDLY walks into. I fail to understand why he won't admit to himself that if he interviewed with Lisa she would never do anything to hurt him. I wish he would see that.
Being a perpetual optimist, a very close friend with Lisa, and an acquaintance of Mr. Brown, I feel torn about this.
I also know a little more about the situation than I am going to let on here, which is why I'm using a pseudonym. ;) (Lisa, I love you to death.
I just think this is a situation that needs to be handled in the delicate way that Lisa has been. GB, not criticizing you. I've wondered the same thing, and maybe am a little blind. But I hope one day, he'll see what the real truth is.
Sigh. Sorry for the rant. Had to get it out.
PS.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LISA!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Sydney What I was saying is that if Alton can't bend his rules for someone who supports him as much as Lisa does and helps his fans the way she does, then he's definitely acting like a high and mighty celebrity who doesn't have time for the little people.
For God's sake she had his book tour up for months before he put it on his own sight and he doesn't even have the events she has up there now.
I didn't get to see him last year because he wasn't close enough to me but I would check here before ever checking his site for that info.
And that's sad. He should recongize her work FOR him!!!!
Hell its not like she running a site for Brad Pitt or George Clooney or someone you could never have the chance to met or interview. He's a man who cooks on TV! And one I thought was a regular guy, that's what he says.
@ Gingerbread-I didn't say what I said to cause trouble. I wasn't disagreeing with Lisa at all. I am totally on Lisa's side with all of this.
It's just that I'm torn, and I would like to tell you why. I don't admire many people and this whole thing has honestly knocked me for a loop.
Please, please, email me.
Abghostwriter@gmail.com I promise you I'm on the level.
Hey Sydney I wasn't saying you're disagreeing with Lisa just that Alton has been acting more like a celebrity these days than before. By treating someone poorly who isn't paid to do give him publicity at the level this site does is a crying shame. That's what I'm saying. Its a freakin' interview all he's giving up some of his time to talk about whatever. And he's certainly not shy about telling, explaining about food and cooking.
So what I'm saying is if he can't give back some of his time to someone who spends her time telling the Internets what a great guy he is, then he's a chump plain and simple. There's no excuse for not giving back to some who does so much for you.
I wholly-heartedly agree with your assessment of other interviews he has done. They are out to sell their publications or get hits on their site so there's no loyalty to him. Most to the jackwagons mispronounce his name or do no research on him or ask the same question he's been asked since 1999. So from that standpoint it makes little sense as well.
That's why I say he's acting like a celebrity in regards to this.
Look at it from Alton's angle. He can't agree to every fan with a blog, if he does one the flood gates open for others begging for just one interview. Then he is accused of favoritism by those who couldn't get the interview. The world of food blogging is big, and Alton has more than one fan-run food blog/site. He shouldn't show preference to one fan and their site over another. I understand why Alton, or any moderate celebrity wouldn't want to do such a thing. But acting indignant about his personal choice doesn't help anything.
And just because Lisa does this for free does not entitle her to anything. She made the choice to create and update the blog. Alton shouldn't be guilt-tripped into an interview.
Nicholas, you asshat HE HAS shown favoritism. He gave money to a blog, he has granted interview to other blogs... what's eater.com? orseriouseats.com? BLOGS!
Name all of those fan blogs out there, Nick.
GEFP, yeah he have an interview to that guy.
Alton is a F list celebrity at best acting all high and mighty. I use to be a big fan, not anymore.
Oh, God! Nicholas, please show me where Lisa has ever said Mr. Brown owes her anything?
Try to grasp this concept, if you can.
1. True, there are a million Fan-run blogs out there, and for the most part, they are the most unprofessional pieces of crap on the web. If Mr. Brown took the time to READ Lisa's he would see the difference and the care she puts into it. It's not that he 'owes her a shot' but it would be a nice way of giving back, something he pontificates about often.
2. In the past few years almost every 'major media ' interview with him that I have read has been flawed in some way. They misquote, twist words, and then allow the most heinous people to comment on them. How ethical and professional is that? (that's a rhetorical question). I was at an interview done by the Food Editor of the NY (Sl)Times and the woman was a child.
Lisa may not be "owed' a shot, but she CERTAINLY deserves one.
At least we know she won't mispronounce his name like most 'major media ' do.
Hang in there Lis. The people who have followed Alton for 12 years, who have seen the confusing changes in him as of late, but still want to stick by him, understand your frustration.
We know you're one of those people too.
Larry King's producer waited 17 years to get Marlon Brando. :P
