I've been making the Good Eats Hot Cocoa mix for years and couldn't tell you the last time I purchased cocoa mix. Before seeing AB make this mix, I bought Swiss Miss milk chocolate mix for many years. It was ok but nothing spectacular.
A few days ago I learned why I've never gone back to premade cocoa mix. One of my coworkers offered everyone some hot cocoa. It has been bitterly cold and even our work area has been suffering from the chill in the air, so I was happy to take her up on the offer.
I poured the mix into my mug and added the requisite water. But the first sip left something to be desired. At home, I had some of my GE cocoa mix and had a nice mug full after work the evening before. It wasn't even a fair comparison.
Oh, I have modified AB's original recipe. Instead of powdered sugar, I use Splenda. It works great since Splenda dissolves on contact with water. And I don't add the cayenne pepper. :)

It is mighty fine topped with some whipped cream.

Hey Mise! My sisters and I have a rule for Christmas gifts: If we give each other anything, it's got to be homemade. So for Christmas of 2007 I made the Good Eats cocoa, which they LOVED. My older sister hinted that maybe I could make that again for 2008, so I one-upped it and also made mini marshmallows (Alton Brown's recipe, of course) to go along with the cocoa. They were a huge hit. I made a third of the marshmallow batch peppermint flavored (with a touch of red food coloring...they were a lovely pink) and it turned out great. The marshmallow recipe made a ton of marshmallows so I doubled the cocoa recipe and gave some to my parents and grandparents as well. Now I have a whole family of addicts! (I use powdered sugar; I have a fear of all sugar substitutes. I just know they cause cancer.) Of course we always have some around here. We've been buried in snow for the last few weeks so I have some waiting for the kids when they get home from school.
